General description

Located on the right bank of the Sorgue, it is called Bastide de la Baume. It has been described as a bourgeois, if not aristocratic, troglodyte dwelling. Fountaine de Vaucluse

The village is dominated by a gigantic cliff of 230 to 240 meters where the fountain has dug its outlet. It is a siphon 308 meters deep, 223 of which are below sea level. This enormous source has given its name to all the “Vauclusian fountains” in the world.
The first explorations of the chasm began in 1878, and the lowest point, - 308 m from the surface of the cave, was only reached in 1985 by a robot from the Fontaine de Vaucluse Speleological Society .
La Fontaine de Vaucluse, the largest spring in France, is here called “la Fontaine”. This gives rise to the Sorgue which divides into several arms in the Comtadine plain and flows towards Saumane-de-Vaucluse then L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue to then become a tributary of the Ouvèze at Bédarrides and Sorgues and from the Rhône to Avignon.
It is ranked fifth in the world with an annual water flow of 630 million cubic meters (20.0 m3/s). The flow rate at the end of summer 2009 fell to 6 m3/s (79 cm)5, the outflow of water becomes spectacular during periods of flooding (winter and spring with a flow rate which can reach 90 m3/s and in its highest high flow rates, 170 m3/s6).
The outlet of Fontaine de Vaucluse is in fact the most important natural outlet of a “reservoir” (galleries and cavities of the Monts de Vaucluse massif and the Baronnies massif and drains from Mont Ventoux to the Montagne de Lure the waters of rain as well as melting snow) over a total area of 1,100 km2.
